SPOTTING SECRETS HIDDEN IN THE OPEN
A great martial art like Tantui makes sophisticated uses of strategies and tactics. Some of these strategies and tactics, like “flowing with an opponent's momentum” and “pressing in with continuous attacks”, are shown in this video series.
Exotic techniques that are not normally found in most other martial arts, like hook and hang, are also explained. Following traditional Shaolin traditions, some secrets are hidden in the open. Course participants would have much fun spotting them.
How would you counter the felling technique of the triple attack? An effective way is to use Double Spread. Besides the hand technique, footwork and body-movement are important in the counter, manifesting the three external harmonies.
The combat principle of flowing with the opponent's momentum is often heard but little understood. It is well illustrated in this video clip to show the application of the “Double Spread”. Some secrets are hidden in the open. Can you spot them?
The initiator attacks with a middle thrust punch. As the responder defends against the attack, the attacker follows with a low level punch. As the responder sweeps away the second attack, the attacker moves in with a left palm strike. The attacker could strike the responder whereas another person using the same techniques may not. This is due to an important secret which may not be obvious to many people but glaring to the initiated. Do you know what the secret is?
The initiator presses in with three continuous strikes. Although the responder attempts to fight back after the third attack, the initiator brushes it aside and continues with double flying kicks followed with a strike. These pressing attacks are found in Tantui Sequence 10, known as “Arrow Spring”. Can you spot the secrets hidden in the open in this video clip that give the initiator a good chance of being victorious in this encounter?
Firstly, the initiator distracts the responder with some flowery moves before attacking with a thrust punch. Then they reverse roles. As the combatant attacks, the other combatant fells him with an elbow hook on his neck.
The combatants repeat the counter-attack in slow motion. A big secret which many masters keep only for their top students and which causes the opponent to fall onto the ground, is obvious here as the movements are performed slowly. Can you spot it? It is called "elbow-hook".
Here the combatants perform the attack and counter with some speed. Notice that the attacker covers his opponent well to prevent him from striking back while applying the hook to fell him. How would you counter against this hook attack?
A combatant applies the hook in an attempt to fell his opponent. But, interestingly, the attacker finds himself fallen onto the ground instead. The opponent counters the hook by “sweeping” the opponent's leg. The class is obviously amazed by this move.
