FROM THREE STEPS TO ONE STEP IN DEFENCE-CUM-COUNTER
Counter-attacking an opponent may be classified into three categories: "first defend then counter", "defend-cum-counter", and "no defence direct counter". The counters shown in Combat Sequence 6 as well as in Combat Sequence 7 here are in the "defend-cum-counter" category, known in Chinese as "lin siu tai ta", or "lean xiao dai da" in Mandarin.
The pattern for the "defence-cum-counter" tactic used here, "Poisonous Snake Shoots Venom", which needs only one step, is a progression of three patterns, "Bar the Big Boss", "Yuan Tan Tames Tiger" and "Poisonous Snake Shoots Venom". These three steps are in the "first defence then counter" category.
