HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF
24-PATTERN SIMPLIFIED TAIJIQUAN SET
Sifu Robin Gamble | Sifu Manuel Tirado | Sifu Anthony Korahais |
The 24-Pattern Simplified Taijiquan Set was created by the Chinese government in the 1950s for the masses to practice and as a standard form for the Taijiquan section in wushu competitions. The patterns were selected from the 108-Pattern Yang Style Taijiquan Set.
It is so-called because it includes all the 24 important patterns of Taijiquan. Hence, although it is a simplified set, it is comprehensive.
When Taijiquan was first taught in our school, Grandmaster Wong chose this set. He added two patterns to the set, Elbow Strike and Shoulder Strike, so that the set included all the original 13 techniques of Taijiquan. The set was taught in Spain and in Intensive Taijiquan courses in Malaysia.
Practitioners in China and other parts of the world usually practice this set as a graceful exercise without internal force, and in solo without its combat application. But in our school, internal force training and combat application are essential aspects of this set.
This set is demonstrated here by Sifu Robin Gamble , Sifu Manuel Tirado and Sifu Anthony Korahais . There are some slight variations in these different performances.
