COMBAT APPLICATION OF XIAO HUNG QUAN

When Sifu Wong visited Sifu Andrew Barnett's kungfu class in Zurich, Switerland in August 2005, the students took the opportunity to ask Sifu Wong many questions. Ronnie asked if Sifu Wong could show him the combat application of the Xiao Hung Quan set which he (Ronnie) learned at the Shaolin Temple in Henan, China a few years ago.
Sifu Wong explained that “Xiao Hung Quan” was a famous kungfu set practiced at the northern Shaolin Temple in the past. Literally it means “Little Majestic Fist”.
The name “Hung” in “Xiao Hung Quan” is often pronounced the same as “Xiong” in many Chinese dialects, and is taken from the term “Da Xiong Bao Dian”, which means the “Great Majestic Precious Hall”, and refers to the main hall in Buddhist temples where usually Sykamuni Buddha or Amitabha Buddha is worshipped.
In the northern Shaolin Temple in the past, the fundamental Shaolin kungfu set was usually practiced at the main hall. This set was thus called “Da Hung Quan” (“Da Xiung Quan” ), or “Great Majestic Fist”, named after the Great Majestic Precious Hall.
There were different versions of the “Da Hung Quan” taught by different masters during different periods in the long history of the Shaolin Temple. But whatever the version, it was a beautiful set comprising the fundamentals of Shaolin Kungfu.
A shorter vision of the “Da Hung Quan” was also practiced, and it was called “Xiao Hung Quan”. When the northern Shaolin Temple was restored by the present Chinese government, the famous Shaolin master, the Venerable Hai Deng (“Light in the Sea of Suffering”), was invited to teach genuine, traditional Shaolin Kungfu at the temple. This great Shaolin master taught the monks “Xiao hung Quan”.
However, probably due to policy differences, the Venerable Hai Deng soon left the Shaolin Temple, which later became a very popular tourist centre. Since then modern wushu, rather than traditional Shaolin Kungfu, was taught by Shaolin monks in the many wushu centres that mushroomed around the temple after the movie “Shaolin Temple” starred by Jet Li made the Shaolin Temple world famous.
As Sifu Wong had not learnt “Xiao Hung Quan”, he asked Ronnie to show him the set. Then he explained the combat applications of the patterns part by part. Although Sifu Wong did not know the set, he could explain the combat applications of its patterns because of his profound understanding of Shaolin techniques and philosophy. Roland, the assistant instructor of Shaolin Wahnam Switzerland, happened to have a video camera with him then. These video clips were taken impromptu and released here without any editing. Hopefully they may be useful to those practicing this set or modern wushu and wish to know their combat applications.
Combat Application of Xiao Hung Quan (1)
Many students may not realize that bringing the fists to both sides of the waist has martial functions. As explained by Sifu Wong here, every movement in a kungfu set has combat application. Sometimes, one may need to modify some movements, like using the right side instead of the left side as in the set, to suit the combat situation.

Combat Application of Xiao Hung Quan (2)
This video clip is a continuation of the previous one where Sifu Wong demonstrates a deadly application of a seemingly innocent move of bringing two hands parallel together. Students practicing this application need to be very careful not to hurt their training partner. Next Sifu Wong shows the tactic of striking an opponent when his attack is just spent, without blocking his attack but by moving away. Then Sifu Wong shows a deadly kicking technique.

If your opponent holds your hands, an effective counter is to release his grip by “sinking”, then strike him with a palm thrust or a palm strike. Another effective counter is to kick him while releasing his grip.

Sifu Wong demonstrates how a pattern which may appear flowery can be used in a sophisticated manner to lock an opponent's leg and hand and simultaneously strike him. Another innocent-looking pattern can be used to released a grip and simultaneously counter-strike the opponent.

Combat Application of Xiao Hung Quan (5)
Sifu Wong demonstrates counters against an opponent's triple attacks. As the opponent moves in with a middle punch, Sifu Wong retreats and simultaneously responds with a palm strike. Next the opponent executes a low kick. Sifu Wong retreats to a False Leg Stance and strikes the his kicking leg. The opponent retreats the leg and attacks Sifu Wong with a high attack. Sifu Wong “floats” the attack and counter with a strike to his groin. In this video Sifu Wong also demonstrates a profound application of an innocent-looking pattern.

Combat Application of Xiao Hung Quan (6)
First Sifu Wong demonstrates an elbow strike. Then he shows how he may press in to attack the opponent, causing the opponent to be in such an awkward situation that the on-lookers laugh. Sifu Wong also shows how he can use other patterns from Xiao Hung Quan to respond if the opponent counter-attacks.
