TRAVELING DRAGON THIRTEEN-TECHNIQUE SPEAR
The Traveling Dragon Thirteen-Technique Spear is so called because the movements of the spear are like those of a dragon and there are thirteen main techniques. As a dragon, the movements are flowing and graceful but powerful.
The thirteen techniques are:
- “huein” or circle
- “cheong” or spear
- “sou” or sweep
- “thiew” or flick
- “yew” or wave
- “phut” or brush
- “ka” or lift
- “ha ma” or ground
- “hui ma” or return-horse
- “chak shun” or sideways
- “phei shun” or slanting
- “pai tau” or shake head
- “khuen fa” or make flowers
Seven of the Thirteen Techniques
The first seven techniques are shown in this video clip. They are circle, spear, sweep, flick, cover, brush (or separate) and ground.
The Remaining Six Techniques
This video clip shows the six techniques, namely side, slant, lift, return-horse, shake-head and make flowers. Together with the seven techniques shown in the previous video, they make up the thirteen techniques of this spear set. Can you remember the difference between patterns and techniques?
Spear Set Part 1
This video clip shows the first part up to the pattern “Green Dragon Shoots Pearl” in Sequence 3. The technique implemented in this Green Dragon pattern is spear or shoot.
Spear Set Part 2
This second part of the impromptu performance by Sifu Anthony shows Sequence 3 and Sequence 4 of the set. It is remarkable that Sifu Anthony has learnt this set in just a day, and is performing it without prior preparation for the other participants to review.
Spear Set Part 3
This video clip shows Sequences 4, 5 and 6 of the spear set. The class has just completed learning the set in one day, and Sifu Anthony is performing it without prior rehearsal for the course participants to review.
Spear Set Part 4
This video clip shows the concluding Sequences 7 and 8 of the spear set. The course participants learn this set in a day from Grandmaster Wong, and Sifu Anthony is reviewing it in an impromptu demonstration.
